As a teacher I’ve learned that in order for a word to become part of a child’s vocabulary, it must be used between 14-21 times in context. For the words and experiences to penetrate their minds and become a part of who they are, it must be consistent and intentional. I’ve also noticed that when I give my students instructions or help them solve a problem, they don’t know what to say, so I encourage them to repeat after me. And when they have finally learned to use situational solutions on their own, I oftentimes hear myself in them.
It’s no coincidence that we as God’s children have been put under the tutelage of the Holy Spirit, who is is an amazing teacher and in order to build our faith, trust, and hope in Him, He simply instructs us to “Repeat after me.”
"God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?" (Numbers 23:19) What this means is that sometimes, when we don’t have anything profound to say. we have to realize that the most profound things we can say have already been said. "So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it." (Isaiah 55:11)
Understanding ourselves is essential to understanding who God created us to be and His will, purpose, and plan for our lives. When an event outside of our conscious control occurs, and contradicts our expectations, beliefs, values, and or needs, we experience a sense of loss and the trauma cycle begins. Our brain considers these contradictions to be threatening and triggers are fight or flight, fright or freeze response system. By nature, I'm a fighter and no matter what life throws at me, I never give up.
As a result of this, one of the hardest things for me to learn as a Christian was the ability to discern which battles I needed to fight and which battles have already been fought and won on my behalf.
Making a commitment to pray God's Word by faith will help us on this journey of life. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds." (2 Corinthians 10:4) If you are struggling with what to pray in this season, let God's Word be the lamp unto your feet and the light unto your path.
